Jessica Smith is a Full-Time Instructor of English at the University of Alabama and an Adjunct Instructor of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She holds a B.A. in English and Language Theory (summa cum laude, SUNY Buffalo, 2002), M.A. in Comparative Literature (Buffalo, 2005), M.L.S. (Buffalo, 2010), M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Miami University, 2019), and M.A.E. in Secondary English Education (2021). She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Communications at the University of Alabama, focusing on notebooks in American culture and artists’ books.
Her research interests span creative writing, poetry, digital humanities, and librarianship. She has authored poetry collections like How to Know the Flowers and Life-List, and her work explores visual poetry, archival practices, and gender studies. Smith has curated poetry series, guest-edited literary magazines, and volunteers as a first reader for journals like Black Warrior Review.
Smith’s awards include the 2005 Literature Compass Graduate Essay Prize. Her creative and scholarly works have appeared in journals like Quarterly West and Jacket2. She actively bridges poetry and librarianship through projects like archiving the University at Buffalo Poetry Collection and promoting small-press literature.
