Jessica Savage serves as an Art History Specialist at Princeton University's Index of Medieval Art, affiliated with the Department of Art and Archaeology. She has been instrumental in cataloguing, research, and digital humanities initiatives since joining the Index in 2010.
Her educational background includes:
- MLIS from Rutgers University (2014) with concentration in archival practice
- M.Litt in Early European Art History from University of Glasgow (2009)
- BFA in Fine Arts and Art History from Pratt Institute
Savage's research centers on fifteenth-century devotional manuscripts in England and France, examining commemorative miniatures, moralizing virtues, and allegorical subjects in Books of Hours. She investigates manuscript production during the early print age—particularly in Paris—and explores the Index's institutional legacy, digital humanities methodologies, and art cataloguing standards. Her work bridges traditional art historical analysis with cutting-edge digital approaches.
Her publications reveal consistent engagement with medieval religious iconography, pilgrimage artifacts, and manuscript illumination. From Psalm 84.11 visualizations to encyclopedia entries on the Holkham Picture Bible and Margery Kempe, her scholarship demonstrates deep expertise in material culture and theological symbolism across European medieval contexts.
Savage actively contributes to the Index of Medieval Art's mission through collaborative projects like the Morgan Library initiative, conference presentations on digital art history, and participation in events such as Wintersession 2025's excavation archives workshop. Her work integrates technical cataloguing expertise with scholarly research on medieval visual culture.
