Barry Windeatt

Professor Barry Windeatt is an Official Fellow of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, elected in 1978. He currently serves as Keeper of Rare Books and Special Collections.

His extensive institutional service includes:

• Acting Admissions Tutor in Arts (1991)

His research centers on later medieval English literature within European contexts and visual culture, with specialized focus on Chaucer, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe. Current projects examine text-image relationships in medieval East Anglia and gesture/body language in medieval writing, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach bridging literary studies and material culture.

As Keeper of Rare Books, he actively curates the Graham Watson Collection of hand-colored books (c.1770–1840) and revises the College's portrait catalogues, demonstrating sustained engagement with archival scholarship.
