Dr. Jessica Richardson is a Lecturer in Early Modern Art at the University of York's Department of History of Art. She holds a BA from Gonzaga University, an MA from the University of Washington, and an MA/PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art. Her research focuses on Italian art between 1300–1550, emphasizing materiality, sacred presence, and transcultural contexts. Key interests include the agency of art, medieval-to-early modern reception of images, and the interplay between art and the supernatural.
Her academic roles include serving as International Officer for Year Abroad and Visiting Students, Disability Officer, and Coordinator for Languages for All. She contributes to York's Centre for Medieval Studies and Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. Richardson has held prestigious positions at institutions like the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Her publications include co-edited volumes such as *Remembering the Middle Ages in Early Modern Italy* (2015) and *The Aesthetics of Marble* (2021). Current projects include a monograph on miraculous images in Bologna and a study on materials and the supernatural in art. She supervises interdisciplinary doctoral research, including Isaac Nugent’s work on faux antique façade painting.
Richardson’s teaching spans Renaissance art, global perspectives on Italian art, and material agency. She actively organizes international conferences and serves on editorial boards for journals like *York Medieval Press* and *Brill Series: Visualizing the Middle Ages*.
