Dr. Martucci earned her PhD in History & Sociology of Science from Penn, completed a postdoc, and earned an MBE (Master of Bioethics) from the Perelman School of Medicine.
Her research explores how power, marginalization, and identity influence knowledge production in medicine and science, with particular focus on how marginalized and intersectional identities shape experiences within the U.S. healthcare system. Her work prominently features historical analysis of breastfeeding practices in America, examining the 'back-to-the-breast' movement and the construction of breastfeeding as a 'natural' practice.
Dr. Martucci's scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on the intersections of gender, medicine, and cultural history. Her publications demonstrate expertise in medical ethics, the history of breastfeeding, natural motherhood ideology, and the social dimensions of healthcare practices. Her book Back to the Breast: Natural Motherhood and Breastfeeding in America traces the historical trajectory of breastfeeding advocacy from mid-century scientific work through to contemporary hospital practices.
Her work has appeared in prestigious journals including The Journal of Women's History, The Bulletin of the History of Medicine, The Journal of Medical Ethics, and Pediatrics, demonstrating interdisciplinary reach across history, ethics, and clinical medicine.
As Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Martucci plays a significant role in shaping the educational experience for students in her department, while her curatorship at the Barbara Bates Center connects her to the rich history of nursing and healthcare practices.
