Dr. Jessica Martin is a Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Sociology and Social Policy within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She joined the university in 2019 after teaching at the University of Warwick and the University of Leicester. Her research focuses on intersections of gender, class, race, and media, with particular expertise in feminist cultural studies, austerity culture, celebrity studies, and domestic cultures.
Her work analyzes how feminist discourse and public figures navigate escalating social inequalities, particularly through mediated domestic spaces and crisis contexts. She serves as Assistant Editor for The European Journal of Cultural Studies and holds professional memberships in the Cultural Studies Association, British Sociological Association, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Teaching responsibilities include managing the MA Gender Studies program and contributing to undergraduate/postgraduate education. She actively supports widening participation initiatives and student success initiatives as Deputy Director for Student Education.
Her research outputs explore topics like crisis celebrity narratives, emotion management in reality TV, postfeminist advertising, and nostalgia in domestic practices. Key themes include cultural hegemony, austerity politics, and the sociological implications of mediated domesticity.
