Jessica M. Smith is a Professor in the Engineering, Design & Society Department at the Colorado School of Mines, where she directs the Humanitarian Engineering and Science master’s program. Her research focuses on energy, engineering ethics, corporate accountability, and gender dynamics in extractive industries. She holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan and a BA from Macalester College. Notable achievements include the 2018 Western Social Science Association Book Prize for her work on corporate social responsibility and a National Science Foundation grant-funded book on accountability in engineering.
Her research explores energy ethics, public trust, and the social impacts of extractive industries. Recent work addresses fracking controversies and energy justice, emphasizing community engagement and equitable resource management. She also investigates labor practices in mining and oil/gas sectors, informed by her firsthand experience working in Wyoming’s coal mines.
Smith has authored influential publications such as Extracting Accountability (2021) and edited the Energy and Ethics? special issue (2019). She has secured grants from the NSF and NEH, reflecting her commitment to ethical STEM practices. Upcoming engagements include organizing the 2026 Energy Ethics: Infrastructures of Energy event.
