Jessica Hamlin is a Clinical Assistant Professor and co-director in the NYU Art+Education program at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Her work focuses on contemporary art, social justice education, and critical multiculturalism. She previously served as Director of Education at Art21, developing global outreach and educational programs. Her research explores anti-racism, institutional whiteness, and ecological sustainability in educational contexts.
Education Background: Prior to NYU, she led Art21’s education initiatives, fostering collaboration between artists, educators, and policymakers. She co-authored History as Art, Art as History: Contemporary Art in the History Classroom (2009) and is currently working on Notatoolkit: Disrupting Whiteness in Educational Spaces.
Research Interests: Hamlin’s work bridges art and activism, emphasizing civic participation, restorative justice, and ecological sustainability. She critiques institutional whiteness and promotes anti-racist pedagogies through interdisciplinary approaches.
