Françoise N. Hamlin is the Royce Family Associate Professor of Teaching Excellence in History and Africana Studies at Brown University. She specializes in 20th-century U.S. history, African American history, and southern studies. Her research emphasizes women’s roles in the Black Freedom Struggle, oral history methodologies, and the ethical dimensions of historical interpretation. Currently, she explores the impact of activism on children and youth during the civil rights movement.

Her book Crossroads at Clarksdale won the 2012 Berkshire Conference First Book Prize and the 2013 Lillian Smith Award. She co-edited These Truly Are The Brave, a finalist for the QBR Wheatley Book Award (2016). Her work revisits marginalized narratives, such as Vera Mae Pigee’s autobiography, and challenges conventional historical periodizations of the civil rights era.
Teaching: Courses include Rethinking the Civil Rights Movement, African American Women’s History, and American Patriotism in Black and White. She emphasizes experiential learning and ethical engagement, as seen in her 2020 article on historians’ responsibilities. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by the 2015 Senior Class Excellence in Teaching Award and the William G. McLoughlin Award (2014).
