Jess P. Shatkin, MD, MPH is a Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He is based at the Child Study Center within Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, where he leads educational initiatives including residency training, medical student education, and grand rounds. He is also the founder and director of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies (CAMS) undergraduate program at NYU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
His educational background includes an MD from SUNY-Downstate (1996), an MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1988), and a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry from UCLA Medical Center (2001). He is board certified in both general and child & adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology.
Dr. Shatkin’s research and clinical interests center on child and adolescent mental health, with a strong focus on sleep disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, disruptive behaviors, and high-risk behaviors. He has developed innovative wellness programs such as the Rapid Education in Sleep Training (REST) and the Wellness Initiative at NYU (WIN), which incorporate randomized controlled trials to evaluate their impact on student resilience and sleep quality. His work bridges clinical psychiatry, public health, and digital interventions to improve youth mental health outcomes.
His recent publications highlight trends in pediatric sleep medicine, digital wellness in college populations, and developmental differences in sleep regulation. These works reflect a multidisciplinary approach combining psychiatry, public health, and behavioral science to address mental health across the lifespan.

Dr. Shatkin has authored over 100 articles, chapters, and abstracts, as well as three books, contributing significantly to medical literature in child psychiatry and mental health education. He supervises the child and adolescent psychiatry residency program and mentors medical students and trainees through academic and clinical pathways. His CAMS program offers nearly 50 undergraduate courses, creating a pipeline for future mental health professionals.
He is actively involved in research through randomized trials embedded in educational interventions and leads academic efforts at one of the nation’s leading child psychiatry centers. His work in sleep, digital health, and preventive mental health underscores a commitment to innovation and evidence-based practice.
