Jess Fletcher serves as a Senior Lecturer in Applied Medicine within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society at the University of Chester. With over 14 years of higher education teaching experience, she specializes in delivering the Cell and Tissue Biomedicine Theme for the MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme. Her academic journey includes progressive roles from Tutor/Teaching Associate at Bangor University (2010-2015), to Lecturer (2016-2022) and Senior Lecturer (2022-2025) at Swansea University, before joining Chester Medical School.
Her educational background features a PhD in Cancer Research and BSc in Biomedical Science from Bangor University, complemented by a PGCertHE. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Licentiate of the Institute of Biomedical Science, she maintains strong professional credentials in both education and biomedical sciences.
Fletcher's research program centers on authentic assessment methodologies and their impact on student learning experiences, with particular focus on innovative approaches like podcast assessments. She simultaneously investigates how informal science learning environments contribute to wellbeing and community building, as evidenced by her 'SciComm for Wellbeing' project examining science centers' effects on brain injury rehabilitation. Her publication record shows consistent output across medical education, cancer research, and mitochondrial biology, demonstrating interdisciplinary expertise that bridges clinical education with fundamental biomedical science.
