Jess Beck is an Assistant Professor (Ad Astra Fellow) at the School of Archaeology, University College Dublin. Previously held positions include College Fellow in Archaeological Science at Harvard University (2021–2022), Adjunct Assistant Professor at Vassar College (2019–2021), and Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2017–2019). Holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Michigan (2016), MA from University of Michigan (2011), and BA/English Literature from McGill University (2008).
Research focuses on bioarchaeology, human osteology, and social inequality in prehistoric Europe. Key projects include studies of Copper Age Iberian ditched enclosures (Los Melgarejos/Marroquíes), Transylvanian Bronze Age mortuary practices, and isotopic dietary analysis. Teaches courses on osteology, bioarchaeology, archaeological theory, and inequality at UCD and prior institutions.
Grants include the Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship (2017–2019) and NSF-DDIG (2014–2017). Research affiliations include Harvard University (2022–2024) and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. Active in promoting open research practices and critical publishing ethics in archaeology.
