Karin Kopetzky is a Senior Academy Research Fellow at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), specializing in Egyptian and Near Eastern archaeology. She is affiliated with the research groups 'Archaeology in Egypt and Sudan' and 'Mediterranean Economies,' focusing on settlement archaeology, Egyptian-Levantine relations, and ceramic analysis.
She earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology and Classical Archaeology from the University of Vienna in 2005. Since 1988, she has been a key member of the Austrian excavations at Tell el-Dabʿa, Egypt, and has collaborated on projects in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. Her work includes the Chekka Region in Lebanon (Tell Mirhan), combining fieldwork with radiocarbon dating and LiDAR surveys.
Research interests span ceramics, mortuary practices, chronological frameworks, and cultural exchange networks. She has held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at Harvard University (2011–2014) and contributed to interdisciplinary projects like SCIEM 2000 and East-West collaborations. Her publications address Middle Bronze Age pottery, settlement patterns, and Egypt's interactions with the Levant.
She co-leads the 'Between Land and Sea' project and has edited volumes on excavation archives and Mediterranean economies. Her work bridges traditional archaeology with digital documentation, including 3D modeling of ancient sites.
