Jersey Liang is a Professor in Health Management and Policy/Global Public Health and Research Professor at the Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan. He holds affiliations with the Center for Chinese Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Medical School, and School of Public Health. His expertise lies in comparative social gerontology and medical sociology, focusing on cross-cultural analyses of health dynamics, geriatric care, and aging populations.
Dr. Liang earned his PhD in Sociology from Wayne State University (1978). He leads the Comparative Aging Research Program (CARP), a multi-national initiative spanning the US, Japan, Taiwan, and China, examining longitudinal health data and policy impacts. He teaches HMP677: Health Care Organization: An International Perspective, comparing healthcare systems globally.
Recipient of two National Institute on Aging MERIT Awards and a Gerontological Society of America Fellow, Liang has served on NIH study sections and editorial boards, including as Editor for Social Sciences in the Journal of Gerontology. His work emphasizes cross-cultural geriatric care management and population health equity.
Collaborative affiliations include institutions in East Asia such as Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, Peking University, and Wuhan University, where he has held visiting scientist roles. His research integrates policy, cultural contexts, and aging populations to inform global health strategies.
