Dr. Jerry Ongerth is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong's School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering. With over 40 years of experience, he specializes in environmental engineering, focusing on microbial monitoring in water systems, particularly Cryptosporidium and Giardia. His academic career includes roles at UNSW Sydney (1995–2002) and the University of Washington (1984–1995). He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan (1973).
Research interests include advanced molecular detection methods (e.g., LAMP technology), wastewater epidemiology, and public health implications of waterborne pathogens. He has supervised PhD research on Cryptosporidium/Giardia monitoring and contributed to over 90 publications. Awards include the Rudolf Hering Medal (2018) and multiple best-paper awards.
Professional certifications include Civil Engineer licenses in California and Michigan. Current availability includes supervision of higher-degree research students in water/wastewater engineering and hazardous waste management.
