Jerome Ellis is a disabled Grenadian-Jamaican-American artist, poet, and lecturer at Yale University. He specializes in interdisciplinary work across music, performance, writing, video, and photography, focusing on stuttering as a lens for exploring justice and societal norms. His notable works include the album The Clearing and poetry collection Aster of Ceremonies, which challenge performative fluency and reframe speech rhythms in art.
Ellis holds a BA from Columbia University and has presented at venues like Lincoln Center, REDCAT, and the Whitney Biennial. His current project Offerings, commissioned for the 2024 Whitney Biennial, explores sound and text installations. He has received prestigious fellowships including the Fulbright Award and Creative Capital Award.
A resident of Norfolk, Virginia, Ellis lives with his spouse, poet-ecologist Luísa Black Ellis. VCFA honored him with an honorary degree in 2024, recognizing his transformative contributions to art and culture.
