John Gianvito is a Professor in the Department of Visual & Media Arts at Emerson College. A renowned director, teacher, and curator, he is celebrated for his politically charged films such as PROFIT MOTIVE AND THE WHISPERING WIND and HER SOCIALIST SMILE. His work has been honored at major festivals including BAFICI, Belfort EntreVues, and the New York Film Festival. Gianvito previously curated the Harvard Film Archive for five years and edited Andrei Tarkovsky: Interviews.
His films explore themes of labor rights, political imagination, and social justice through experimental and documentary formats. Notable works include the nine-hour diptych FOR EXAMPLE, THE PHILIPPINES and the collective film FAR FROM AFGHANISTAN. Retrospectives of his work have been showcased at VIENNALE, Cinéma du Réel, and the Seoul Independent Documentary Festival.
Awardees of his films span prestigious accolades such as the National Society of Film Critics' 'Best Experimental Film' and inclusion in Time Out's 50 Greatest Documentaries. His research interests bridge cinema studies, political activism, and curatorial practices.
