Jeroen Oomen is an Assistant Professor at the Urban Futures Studio within Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. His work focuses on how knowledge shapes societal conceptions of the future, particularly in climate policy and geoengineering. He holds a PhD from LMU Munich and has been a Marie Curie Fellow and visiting researcher at Harvard University and KTH Stockholm. His interdisciplinary background spans philosophy, political science, and the history of science and technology.
Key research areas include climate engineering ethics, sociotechnical imaginaries, and the interplay between science and policy. He authored the book Imagining Climate Engineering (2021) and contributes frequently to media discussions on geoengineering and sustainability. Oomen’s expertise includes climate change mitigation strategies, futuring techniques, and institutional frameworks for open societies.
He has participated in high-profile climate policy debates, including COP28 discussions and Dutch climate litigation cases. His work emphasizes the performative role of imagined futures in shaping sustainable development pathways.
