Dr. Jeroen Hopster is an Assistant Professor of Ethics at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Utrecht University. He specializes in technology ethics, climate ethics, and moral philosophy, focusing on the interplay between technology, conceptual change, and societal disruption. His research explores just transitions, the ethical implications of socially disruptive technologies, and the dynamics of moral objectivity. Currently, he leads the VENI project 'Lost in Transition' and contributes to the NWO gravitation programme 'Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies (ESDiT)'. He coordinates the 'Sustainable Futures' research theme at the Ethics Institute and participates in 'Autonomous Agency and Technology' projects.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (Utrecht University, 2019) with a focus on evolutionary ethics. Postdoctoral research included a Rubicon fellowship at the University of Graz and roles at the University of Twente. Visiting fellowships at Harvard University, Jagiellonian University (Kraków), UniSR (Milan), and Graz. Member of the Utrecht Young Academy since 2024.
Research interests span technomoral revolutions, climate justice, animal ethics, and public philosophy. He publishes widely in academic journals and authored Dutch trade books on topics like coincidence, counterfactual history, and Buddhist philosophy. Outreach includes organizing philosophical cafés, co-organizing the 'Utrechtse Nacht van de Filosofie,' and contributing to Filosofie Magazine and Wijsgerig Perspectief.
Teaching includes courses on climate ethics, ethics of technology, moral psychology, and just transitions at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, emphasizing accessible discourse on complex ethical issues.
