Jeremy de Beer is a Full Professor at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, and Canada Research Chair in Innovation and Intellectual Property Law. He co-leads the Open African Innovation Research Network (Open AIR), focusing on equitable access to knowledge, technology transfer, and sustainable development. His roles include Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation and Visiting Researcher at the University of Johannesburg's College of Business and Economics.
His research spans intellectual property law, technology innovation, international trade, and public policy. Key areas include open science, equitable access to medicines, and climate change solutions through collaborative partnerships across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. He advises governments and international bodies like the UN, African Union, and EU agencies, influencing national laws and policies.
In Canada, he has advised Supreme Court cases (15 pleadings) and testified before parliamentary committees. His work earned the 2023 SSHRC Impact Award and 2024 Royal Society of Canada Fellowship. Teaching focuses on property law and intellectual property advocacy, with a commitment to experiential learning and technology integration.
