Jeremy Schneider is an Assistant Professor of the History of Science pre-1850 at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. Born in Heidelberg, he holds a PhD from Princeton University and BA/MA degrees from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
- Education: Ph.D. in History of Science (Princeton), BA/MA in History & Philosophy (LMU Munich)
His research focuses on early modern European science, particularly pre-modern understandings of earth systems, extinction, and non-visual scientific observation. His first book The Graveyard of Shells: Extinction in Early Modern Europe (2024) re-examines species extinction debates before Darwin, while his second project investigates blind naturalists' contributions to science.
Scientific awards include:
- Caspar Friedrich Wolff Medal (2024)
- Ronald Rainger Prize (2023)
- Trevor Levere Prize (2017)
Grants from DAAD, NSF, Andrew Mellon Foundation, Folger Shakespeare Library, Dibner Library, and Smithsonian Institution support his scholarship. He has also contributed to editing Albert Einstein's collected papers at Caltech.
