Jeremy Mayer is an Associate Professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University, where he also directs the Political Science Doctoral and Master's Programs. He holds a Ph.D. from Georgetown University and has previously taught at Kalamazoo College and served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University.
His research focuses on American government and politics, with particular expertise in racial politics, media politics, public opinion, elections, and U.S. foreign policy. He employs statistical methods in his research and has contributed significantly to understanding political communication and ideology.
Dr. Mayer has authored and co-authored several influential books, including Running on Race: Racial Politics in Presidential Campaigns 1960-2000 and American Media Politics in Transition, and has published in journals such as Presidential Studies Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, and The Historian. His work reflects a strong interdisciplinary approach across political science subfields.
Notable awards include the Rowman & Littlefield Award in Innovative Teaching from the American Political Science Association, the only national teaching award in political science, and he is a two-time recipient of the Alumni Faculty Award at the Schar School. In 2018, he received the Don Lavoie Teaching Award from the faculty.
Dr. Mayer has trained U.S. diplomats at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute since 2002 and has represented the U.S. in international forums in Germany, Moldova, and Mexico. He frequently provides political commentary for major media outlets including BBC, Fox News, PBS, NPR, CNBC, and local networks.
