Jeremy Johnson is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Computer Science at the College of Computing & Informatics (CCI), Drexel University. He holds joint appointments in computer science and electrical and computer engineering, contributing significantly to both academic leadership and research innovation.
His research focuses on the intersection of mathematics and computing, particularly in algebraic algorithms, symbolic computation, programming languages, and high-performance computing. He leads the Applied Symbolic Computation lab, which develops methods to automatically derive and optimize implementations of mathematically structured algorithms.
Dr. Johnson has played key leadership roles in the symbolic computation community, currently serving as chair of ACM SIGSAM and on the editorial board of Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing. He previously served on the ISSAC steering committee and guest-edited special issues of the Journal of Symbolic Computation. His work has been supported by major initiatives including DARPA and the Department of Energy, notably in the SPIRAL project and Power Grid Project.
His scholarly contributions include co-editing the book Quantifier Elimination and Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition, and developing domain-specific languages like Tensor Product Language and SPL for algorithm optimization.
He is actively involved in mentoring, research direction, and academic service. He has led significant research teams and labs focused on automated performance tuning and symbolic methods in computing.
