Jeremy Garza

Jeremy Garza serves as a Lecturer at Austin Community College's Eastview Campus within the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. He functions as Additional Instructor for microbiology-focused courses BIOL 1406 and BITC 2486, utilizing Mycobacterium smegmatis for phage discovery and genomic analysis with undergraduate students.

His research interests center on experimental microbiology and bacterial genomics, specifically through hands-on phage isolation and characterization. Garza has instructed 26 students across two course sections (19 freshmen in Spring 2024 meeting weekly for 1.5 hours, and 7 students in Fall 2023 meeting twice weekly for 6 hours total), emphasizing practical laboratory techniques in microbial evolution.

As part of the national SEA-PHAGES network, Garza contributes to this undergraduate research initiative that bridges classroom instruction with authentic scientific discovery in viral genomics, participating in program workshops and symposia including the upcoming 2025-2026 events calendar.
