Eric Miller is a Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University, where he has served as primary instructor for the SEA-PHAGES program's Phage Hunters course (BIT(MB) 210) and Phage Genomics course (BIT(MB) 211) from 2014 to 2018.
His research centers on bacteriophage discovery and genomic analysis, utilizing bacterial hosts including Mycobacterium smegmatis, Mycobacterium sp., and Paenibacillus larvae. The work integrates wet-lab microbiology with computational genomics to study phage diversity and evolutionary mechanisms.
Dr. Miller employs innovative digital pedagogy including LabArchives eNotebooks for real-time laboratory documentation and Google Sheets for collaborative progress tracking. Each course section enrolls 12-18 freshmen meeting twice weekly for 4-6 hours, emphasizing hands-on phage isolation, genome annotation, and data management.
He has mentored over 85 undergraduate students in phage research projects through the SEA-PHAGES program, fostering skills in experimental design and scientific communication within the HHMI-funded initiative.
