Jeremy Ahearne is Professor of French at the University of Warwick's School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Faculty of Arts), currently on Leverhulme-funded research leave (2024-25) followed by institutional research leave until April 2026. His distinguished career includes leadership roles as Deputy Chair for Research & Impact (Faculty of Arts, 2021-2024) and Director of Research (School of Modern Languages and Cultures, 2019-2023).
Education:
- BA, University of Oxford
- DPhil, University of Oxford
Ahearne's research pioneers the intersection of French political history, cultural policy, and language politics. He examines how governments shape cultural identities through secularism (laïcité), education reform, media narratives, and memory politics, with particular focus on France's international cultural projection. His work reveals complex power dynamics in linguistic hierarchies, notably analyzing Macron's language diplomacy and justifications for French as a 'supercentral' language. Current research investigates global French language projection under a Leverhulme Fellowship.
His 15 publications (2009-2024) demonstrate evolving emphasis from domestic French cultural policy toward transnational language regimes. Key trends include critical analysis of UNESCO's cultural diversity framework, recognition theory applications in international relations, and historical studies of intellectual engagement. Collectively, they form a cohesive interrogation of cultural governance power structures.
Scientific awards:
- Best Article Award, Modern and Contemporary France (2022) for 'Emmanuel Macron and the Reprojection of the French Language'
Ahearne secured significant external funding including the Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2024-25). His administrative leadership encompasses directing Warwick's Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies (2014-2017) and shaping faculty-wide research strategy. Collaborative projects with UNESCO demonstrate extensive international scholarly networks, though no formal lab structure is indicated.
No dedicated research laboratory or permanent team is specified in current materials.
