Jens Peter Christensen is a Professor MSO (Professor with special responsibilities) and Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology. He has been with the Department for Veterinary Disease Biology since 1997 and became Professor MSO for Poultry Diseases in 2017 after serving as Head of the graduate school 'Microbiology' from 2013-2017.
Christensen earned his DVM in 1988, PhD in Veterinary Microbiology in 1996, and became a Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Specialists (ECPVS) in 2013.
His primary research interests focus on infectious poultry diseases including epidemiology, pathogenesis, and pathology. He has extensive practical experience with important poultry infections such as fowl typhoid, fowl cholera, salmonellosis, colibacillosis, and Gram-positive infections. His current research includes avian influenza, and he has developed experimental in vivo poultry models. For the past decade, he has been increasingly involved in poultry disease projects in developing countries including Bangladesh, Vietnam, and many African nations.
Christensen teaches poultry diseases on the veterinary curriculum and participates in postgraduate courses including 'Health & Public Health' and Animal Science. He has served as a resource person for Danida and other agencies on consultancies in Africa and Asia, and has co-organized and lectured at numerous workshops in these regions. He was an expert for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2011.
His research output includes 78 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 9 book chapters, 98 conference proceedings, and 17 popular manuscripts. He has supervised 3 postdocs (1 currently), 10 PhD students (2 currently), and 11 Masters students (1 currently). From 2000 to 2006, he served as Editor for the international journal 'Avian Pathology.'
