Anders Miki Bojesen is a Professor and currently serves as Head of Section for Veterinary Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. His section comprises approximately 70 employees including seven professors and numerous PhD students. Bojesen leads a research group of about 15 international researchers with diverse backgrounds including DVMs, biologists, and biotechnologists.
His educational background includes:
- 2015: Diplomate European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (ECPVS)
- 2003: PhD in Veterinary Microbiology and Poultry Diseases from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University
- 2000: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark
Bojesen's primary research focuses on host-pathogen interactions with the goal of developing tools to prevent infectious diseases. His work spans several key areas including bacteriology, biotechnology applications in animal production, animal models for human diseases, poultry diseases, and infectious diseases in animals. He has particular expertise in studying pathogens like Gallibacterium anatis and Escherichia coli in poultry production systems. His research often takes a One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on poultry disease outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance, gut microbiome development, and biosecurity assessment in farming systems. The research shows consistent attention to practical applications that can improve animal health and food safety while addressing challenges in both industrial and small-scale farming contexts.
Bojesen has received recognition for his expertise through invitations to present at conferences and to media outlets. His activities include:
- Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Gallibacterium from chickens in Denmark and Mexico (2007)
- Forensic Veterinary Pathology - Poultry (2007)
- Contributing to media discussions on avian influenza preparedness (2007)
He has managed significant research projects including the University of Copenhagen Excellence Research Centre for Control of Antibiotic Resistance (UC-Care), a 4.3 million euro multidisciplinary project from 2013-2018. Bojesen is also the co-founder of Bojesen & Petersen Biotech, a spin-off company now commercially active in more than 20 countries across three continents.
His leadership roles have included:
- 2021-present: Head of Section for Clinical Veterinary Microbiology
- 2016-2019: Deputy Head of Section for Clinical Veterinary Microbiology
- 2013-2016: Head of Section for Clinical Veterinary Microbiology
- 2012-2013: Head of Section for Microbiology
- 2010-2011: Deputy Head of Section for Microbiology
Bojesen maintains professional connections with animal production companies and pharmaceutical industries through externally funded projects and serves on the Danish Poultry Levy Foundation in his capacity as a University of Copenhagen employee.
