Dr. José A. Quinteros is a Lecturer in Poultry Health at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney. He holds a DVM from the University of Chile (2004), followed by an MVSc and PhD. His career began in 2005 as a field veterinarian at Sopraval S.A., where he specialized in diagnosing and treating prevalent poultry diseases like Fowl Cholera, avian influenza H1N1, and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT). He later joined the Quality Assurance team, overseeing national/international regulatory programs.
Research focuses on avian virology, including coronaviruses (e.g., infectious bronchitis virus) and bacterial pathogens. His work explores genomics, pathogenesis, and diagnostic tools for poultry diseases. Notable projects include optimizing protein nutrition for poultry resilience in tropical climates (2024 SSEAC Grant) and reconnecting with the Australian poultry industry for critical research (2023 SSVS Grant).
He has been featured in media, including an ABC interview (January 2025) discussing avian flu H5N1 in humans. He is a member of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre and contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations.
