Prof. Jens Niebaum is an Assistant Professor of Italian Art History at the University of Münster. He leads research projects such as A3-18 (Sacrality and cultures of piety in Habsburg buildings) and has been involved in the Cluster of Excellence. His work focuses on early modern architecture, sacral decoration, and ruler sacrality in medieval and early modern Europe.
Education: PhD stipend at the Max Planck Institute for Art History (2001–2003). Academic career includes roles at the Bibliotheca Hertziana and the MPI for Science History (2003–2007).
Research Interests: Mediality and emotionality in architecture, transcultural entanglements, and sacral symbolism in art and urban spaces. Recent publications explore pest imagery in art, Renaissance church design, and architectural knowledge cultures.
Teaching: Courses on Baroque architecture, early modern art, and the cultural history of urban spaces. Current lectures include 'Architecture and Evidenz' (2025) and 'Colloquium.'
Grants & Projects: Head of project A3-18 and research associate in B2-23. Collaborations include studies on Ukrainian memorial sites and architectural analysis in Münster.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Cluster of Excellence's 'Transcultural Entanglement and Disentanglement' field, focusing on mediality and ambiguity in decision-making.
