Jens Kastner

Jens Kastner is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna since 2008. He holds a habilitation from Leuphana University Lüneburg (2018) and previously taught at institutions including the University of Münster, University of Vienna, and Vienna University of Technology. His research focuses on cultural theory, art criticism, social movements, anarchism, and Latin American studies. He coordinates Bildpunkt, a journal by the IG Bildende Kunst, and advises doctoral students in German, English, and Spanish.

Research interests span the interplay between art and social theory, historical analysis of anarchist movements, and critical approaches to Latin American cultural politics. Recent publications explore Deleuze’s art theory, German pop music’s political roles, and biographies of radical figures like Federica Montseny.

Teaching includes seminars on aesthetics, art sociology, and critical theory across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Limited dissertation supervision capacity is currently open for new candidates.
