Jens Johan Hyvik is a Professor of Modern History in the Department of Economics, History and Social Sciences at USN Business School, University of Southeastern Norway, with additional affiliation as Professor II at Telemark Museum. His academic work focuses on Norwegian history, identity politics, and Middle Eastern studies, with particular expertise in nationalism, language politics, and cultural history.
Hyvik holds a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Oslo, with his doctoral work focusing on Norwegian expeditions in the 18th and 19th centuries. His academic journey has led him to become a prominent scholar in Norwegian historical studies, with additional international experience as a guest professor at Luther College in Iowa, USA.
His primary research interests include nationalism and identity formation in both Norwegian and international contexts, Nynorsk writing culture, patriotism and nationalism in Norway during the 18th and 19th centuries, elite culture and popular culture dynamics, Middle Eastern history since 1800 (particularly Palestine and Israel), and Norwegian emigration to the USA. His work often explores the intersection of cultural identity, language politics, and national development.
Hyvik's publications reveal a consistent focus on identity formation, with particular emphasis on how cultural and linguistic divisions shape national consciousness. His recent book "The History of Palestine and Israel in Modern Times" (2024) represents a significant contribution to Middle Eastern studies, while his ongoing research on the "tokulturlæra" (theory of two cultures) in Norwegian history demonstrates his expertise in cultural stratification and national identity formation.
Professor Hyvik is an active contributor to public discourse through lectures on Norwegian history, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Norwegian language development, and Norwegian emigration to America. His work bridges academic scholarship and public engagement, making complex historical topics accessible to broader audiences.
