Jens Hainmueller is the Kimberly Glenn Professor of Political Science and Director of Graduate Studies in Stanford University’s Department of Political Science. He co-directs the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab and is affiliated with the Stanford Center for Causal Science, the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, and the Europe Center. His research focuses on statistical methods, causal inference, immigration policy, and political economy, with over 70 publications and 40,000 citations.
Education: PhD in Government from Harvard University (2009), MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School (2005), M.Sc. in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics (2003), and B.A. in Political Science from Tubingen University (2001).
Research interests include developing statistical tools like synthetic control methods, entropy balancing, and GeoMatch algorithms, alongside contributions to open-source software for empirical research. His work bridges methodological innovation and substantive political questions.
Notable awards include the Gosnell Prize, Warren Miller Prize, and Carnegie Fellowship. He previously taught at MIT before joining Stanford, and his lab focuses on data-driven solutions for immigration policy challenges.
