Professor Jenny Persson leads cutting-edge cancer metastasis research at Umeå University's Department of Molecular Biology within the Faculty of Medicine. Her work focuses on deciphering molecular mechanisms driving cancer spread and developing targeted therapies, particularly for prostate and breast cancers. She maintains active laboratory facilities at the Hospital Area (Plats 6K and 6L) in Umeå and serves on the Faculty of Medicine Council for AI and Autonomous Systems.
Her research centers on lipid kinase pathways (PIP5K1α/PI3K/AKT), androgen receptor signaling, and tumor microenvironment interactions. Key interests include:
- Mechanisms of bone metastasis in prostate/breast cancers
- Development of PIP5K1α inhibitors (e.g., ISA-2011B)
- Nanoparticle-based cancer detection systems
- Integration of AI for diagnostic algorithms and treatment prediction
Persson directs significant research funding including EU framework projects (GlycoImaging 721297, REVERT 848098-H2020-SC1-2) and grants from the Swedish Cancer Foundation, Swedish Research Council, and Swedish Children Cancer Foundation. She serves on the Research Grant Review Committee of the Swedish Cancer Foundation and previously held positions as Professor and Head of Experimental Cancer Research at Lund University and Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham.
Her laboratory maintains extensive national and international collaborations with clinical and preclinical researchers, focusing on translating molecular discoveries into clinical applications for metastatic cancers.
