Jennifer Swann is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University's College of Arts and Sciences, where she has served for over 25 years. Her research spans neuroscience, behavioral endocrinology, and academic workplace dynamics, with current office located in Iacocca Hall (D215) and contact via jms5@lehigh.edu.
Her research journey began with circadian rhythm studies identifying multiple biological oscillators, then progressed to neuroendocrinology where she demonstrated sex steroid-induced neural plasticity in male limbic areas requiring BDNF. Currently on laboratory hiatus, she focuses on conflict management, open educational resources, and restorative practices to address workplace bullying in academia. Her work with Lehigh's faculty senate established ethical codes and equitable positions for non-tenured faculty, while her role in the Academic Parity Movement defines faculty bullying standards in higher education.
Recent publications reveal interdisciplinary evolution from core neuroscience to academic culture analysis. Her 2021 nanomedicine studies examine sex as a biological variable and publication bias, while 2020 works address diversity strategies and open educational resource development. Earlier neurobehavioral research (1979-2018) established foundational knowledge on circadian regulation, pheromone processing, and BDNF's role in sexual behavior using rodent models.
Swann maintains active service through the Society of Senior Ford Fellows, International Ombuds Association, and International Association on Workplace Bullying and Harassment. She serves on advisory boards for Academic Parity, COBRE (Delaware State), ASCEND (Morgan State), and environmental justice initiatives including PennFutures and the Lehigh Valley Justice Institute. Though her lab is currently inactive, her 40+ year career demonstrates continuous adaptation from laboratory neuroscience to systemic academic reform.
