Jennifer Melvin

Dr. Jennifer Melvin is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Sociology Program Coordinator at Flagler College. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology (Demography emphasis) from the University of Texas at Austin, alongside M.A. and B.A. in Sociology from the University of Florida. Her research focuses on health disparities in aging populations, particularly examining intersections of race, ethnicity, nativity, and gender. She has received grants such as the NICHD award for studying health trajectories among immigrant groups. Dr. Melvin teaches courses including Health and Society, Social Stratification, and Sociology of Health and Aging. She actively reviews for journals like Journal of Aging and Health and is a member of professional organizations including the American Sociological Association.

Her professional presentations include discussions on nativity differentials in functional limitations and the health experiences of foreign-born elderly women. Awards include UT Austin’s Graduate Diversity Fellowship and National Institute of Child Health Development Dissertation Fellowship. She coordinates the Alpha Kappa Delta Honors Society chapter at Flagler and maintains an office hour schedule on campus.
