Anastacia Schulhoff serves as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Appalachian State University within the College of Arts & Sciences. Since joining the faculty in 2017, she has held key roles including Graduate Coordinator for the Sociology Department, co-advisor of the Sociology Club and Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), and Vice President of Publications for the Association of Humanist Sociology. Her community-engaged scholarship focuses on the High Country region and Native American communities through applied sociological research.
Dr. Schulhoff's research program centers on Gerontology, Health Inequalities/Disparities, and Indigenous Studies, utilizing Photovoice, Narrative Research, and Digital Ethnography to examine cultural identity, social inequalities, and health access. Current projects include a book manuscript on tribal nursing homes (targeted 2023/24 publication), a Photovoice study of pandemic impacts on college students, and rural culturally appropriate care initiatives for racial minorities in South Dakota and the High Country.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent application of critical qualitative methods to aging, health justice, and marginalized populations. Her work demonstrates thematic continuity in intergenerational dynamics (e.g., foster grandparent programs), stigma reduction in health education, and cultural resilience within tribal nursing homes—highlighting how Native American caregivers and residents co-construct identity and community.
In academic service, Dr. Schulhoff mentors students through departmental clubs and graduate coordination while teaching undergraduate courses including Gerontology (SOC 3100), Health Inequalities (SOC 2055/4000), and Race & Ethnicity (SOC 4560), plus graduate courses such as Health Disparities (SOC 5430) and Sociology of Adult Development & Aging (SOC 5400). Her pedagogy integrates active learning tools like Photovoice to address real-world social issues directly in classroom settings.
