Jennifer McCoy is a Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University (GSU), affiliated with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and CEU’s Democracy Institute. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1985). Her expertise spans polarized democracies, electoral processes, and Latin American politics, with a focus on mediation and democratic resilience. As former Director of The Carter Center’s Americas Program (1998-2015), she led projects on conflict prevention, election monitoring, and regional dialogue initiatives. Notable roles include mediating in Venezuela and Ecuador-Colombia conflicts, and organizing former President Carter’s missions to Cuba.
Her current research includes the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship-funded project on mitigating polarization through civic education, and studies on global democratic erosion. Key grants include NSF and USAID support for projects like Colombia’s transitional justice and populism research. Awards include the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellowship and GSU’s Distinguished University Professor title (2013).
