Jennifer McCoy is Regent’s Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University, Nonresident Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Research Affiliate at CEU’s Democracy Institute in Budapest. She specializes in democratic erosion, polarization, mediation, election processes, and Latin American politics. Her work combines academic research with policy engagement, including mediation efforts in Venezuela and Ecuador-Colombia disputes.
Her research focuses on 'pernicious polarization' and strategies to counter democratic backsliding. Recent projects include a Carnegie-funded initiative on civic education interventions to address disinformation and polarization. She has authored/co-edited six books, including Polarizing Polities: A Global Threat to Democracy (2019) and a forthcoming Depolarizing Politics with Princeton University Press.
McCoy’s awards include the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. She teaches courses on comparative democratization, international norms, and Latin American politics. Her grants include NSF, USAID, and USIP funding. She has served as Director of the Carter Center’s Americas Program (1998-2015), leading election monitoring and mediation missions.
