Jennifer Lewis is the Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), and a Core Faculty member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. She leads the Lewis Lab, focusing on advanced materials fabrication, 3D printing, and biomanufacturing. Previously, she was Director of the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory and Hans Thurnauer Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her research spans functional materials for energy applications (e.g., solar spectrum utilization), microscale 3D printing technologies, and biomanufacturing of living tissues. Notable achievements include her work on soft and living matter, recognized by MIT Technology Review’s 2014 “10 Breakthrough Technologies.” She co-founded two companies to commercialize lab technologies and has pioneered vascularized organ-specific tissues for medical applications.
Her scientific contributions include seminal studies in biomimetic 4D printing and hybrid electronics manufacturing. Awards include the NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow Award (1994), Brunauer Award (2003), and MRS Medal (2012). She serves on editorial boards for Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, and Soft Matter.
