Changyong (Chase) Cao is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering. His research focuses on smart multifunctional materials, soft robotics, wearable electronics, and self-powered sensing systems. Key areas include bioinspired materials, energy harvesting, and 3D/4D printing of advanced materials.
He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science from the Australian National University (2014). His work spans interdisciplinary fields such as metamaterials, flexible sensors, and precision agriculture technologies. Notable achievements include the development of triboelectric nanogenerators for energy harvesting and soft robots inspired by biological systems.
Dr. Cao has received prestigious awards like the Nanoscale Emerging Investigator Award (2025) and leads editorial roles in journals like Smart Materials and Methods and Frontiers in Robotics and AI. His lab, Soft Machines & Electronics Lab, pioneers innovations in soft robotics and printable electronics.
