Dr. Jennifer Lee Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University (MSU) and founder/director of the Toxic Action Lab. Her research focuses on human-environmental interactions in contexts of economic, ecological, and socio-political change. She conducts long-term fieldwork in Ugandan fisheries (since 2007) and community-engaged research on environmental contamination and health equity in U.S. Midwest cities (since 2020). Supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, her work bridges engaged anthropology, feminist political ecology, and environmental justice.
Johnson holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability. Prior to MSU, she was an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Purdue University, a Carson Fellow at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, and a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University’s Agrarian Studies Program. She has also completed the Robert Wood Johnson Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Program.
Her research emphasizes collaborative, action-oriented approaches with residents, scientists, and policymakers. Notable projects include the Toxic Action Lab’s work on environmental justice in small cities and the Otsego group’s $500K grant (2025) tracking public health amid contamination concerns. Awards include recognition as a Carson Fellow and participation in RWJ’s leadership program.
