Dr. Jennifer L Hansen is a Professor in the Philosophy Department at St. Lawrence University, holding the William L Fox Professorship in Public Health Education. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University and an M.A. in Philosophy with Distinction from Boston College.
Dr. Hansen's research explores the intersections of philosophy, ethics, technology, and contemporary social issues, with core focus on Philosophy of Psychiatry. She critically examines epistemological and normative assumptions underlying depression diagnoses, with particular attention to gender disparities. Her philosophical approach draws from Phenomenology, Feminist Philosophy, and American Pragmatism. Recently, she has expanded into Cybersecurity, teaching the core Cyberethics course while pursuing a degree in the field.
Her recent publications span topics from neuroenhancement ethics to digital feminist publics, with a notable 2023 article reconsidering philosophy of leisure's role in human flourishing. Her work demonstrates consistent engagement with how philosophical frameworks can address pressing contemporary issues in mental health, gender, and technology.
Among her honors are the Luther W. and Bernice L. Thompson Distinguished Teaching Award from Gettysburg College (2005), the President's Award to Distinguished Doctoral Students (1999), and recognition for her M.A. in Philosophy with Distinction from Boston College (1994).
Dr. Hansen has held significant administrative roles including Chair of the Philosophy Department (2009-2015), Coordinator of Gender and Sexuality Studies (2009-2010), and Associate Dean of the First Year Program (2014-2018). She co-developed college courses at Riverview Correctional Facility, which evolved into a degree-granting initiative. Her teaching portfolio spans Ancient Philosophy, Philosophy of American Philosophy, Philosophy of Psychiatry, Cyberethics, Feminist Philosophy, Existentialism and Phenomenology, Health Humanities, and Africana Philosophy.
