Jennifer McWeeny is Professor at Emerson College's Marlboro Institute for Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies and Visiting Professor II at the University of Oslo's Centre for Gender Research. Her interdisciplinary work centers on feminist philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and decolonial studies, influencing fields from critical race theory to disability studies.
She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Oregon, an M.A. from the University of Hawaii, and a B.A. from Colorado College. Her educational background reflects deep engagement with philosophical traditions and interdisciplinary scholarship.
McWeeny pioneered feminist philosophy of mind, theorizing gender through self-body relations in consciousness. Her research spans phenomenology, existentialism, and decolonial theory, addressing oppression, liberation, and intersections of gender, race, and sexuality. She applies these frameworks to trauma studies, ecofeminism, and queer theory, emphasizing embodied consciousness in social contexts.
Her publications reveal a trajectory toward decolonial and liberatory philosophies, integrating diverse traditions and challenging Western epistemological dominance. Recent work focuses on gender ontology and consciousness under oppression, with significant contributions to Beauvoir scholarship and María Lugones' visionary philosophy.
Accolades include the Fulbright National Research Scholar Award (France 2019-2020). She serves as Editor in Chief of Simone de Beauvoir Studies and on Oxford University Press's Studies in Feminist Philosophy editorial board.
McWeeny teaches Gender, Race, and Class; Existentialisms; and Decolonizing the Mind using cooperative, student-centered methods that engage emotional, spiritual, and practical dimensions. Her pedagogy fosters critical dialogue on decolonization and self-realization, though formal graduate student mentorship details aren't specified in public materials.
