Jennifer Kapo, MD, is the Sherwin B. Nuland and Michael K. Vlock Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine and Chief of the Palliative Medicine Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale New Haven Health. She holds an academic appointment in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Her clinical focus is palliative care for cancer patients, with a research mission centered on improving serious illness communication, opioid management in advanced cancer, and advance care planning. She leads initiatives to expand palliative care training, including developing an ACGME-certified hospice and palliative medicine fellowship.
Dr. Kapo’s research spans opioid management in complex cases, telehealth palliative care during the pandemic, and healthcare worker resilience during crises. She has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications and serves on multiple national and institutional committees, including Yale Cancer Center’s leadership and the American College of Surgeons Cancer Program Committee. Recognized for her contributions, she received the 2021 Connecticut Coalition President’s Award and Yale’s Emerging Leaders in Internal Medicine Award (2020).
Her clinical roles include leadership in Smilow’s Physician Leadership Council and YCC Clinical Council. She actively participates in education initiatives such as the Bystander Empowerment Workshop to address microaggressions in clinical settings. Dr. Kapo earned her MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed residency at the University of Colorado, with fellowships in Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care at the University of Pennsylvania.
