Professor Jennifer Ingleheart holds a faculty position in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. Her research focuses on Latin poetry (especially Ovid, Catullus, and the elegists), its cultural and political contexts, and its reception in later periods, particularly regarding constructions of homosexuality. She has authored monographs including Masculine Plural: Queer Classics, Sex, and Education (2018) and edited volumes exploring Ovid's exile and 'Romosexuality.'
Education & Career: Appointed at Durham in 2004 after a D.Phil. at Oxford and prior teaching roles in the US and Wales. Active in public outreach, delivering school talks on Ovid and classical reception. Curated the Bodleian Library's 2018-19 Story of Phi exhibit on censored texts.
Research Interests: Ovidian exile, Roman homosexuality in modern identities, classical translation history, and queer classicism. Organized a British Academy-funded conference on 'Romosexuality' (2012), leading to an OUP volume.
Supervision: Mentors students on Latin poetry, reception studies, and the intersection of Roman culture with modern LGBTQ+ identities. Current advisees include Francesca Salvatori, Lucy Smith, Meg Finlayson, and Siobhan McShane.
Grants & Funding: Secured British Academy support for the 2012 'Romosexuality' conference. Collaborates widely, including with the Bodleian Library and BBC (featured in Michael Wood's 2017 documentary on Ovid).
