- Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University (1979)
- B.A. from Oberlin College (1971)
Hochschild's research examines the intersection of American politics and political philosophy, with particular focus on race, ethnicity, immigration, and genomic science. Her current work addresses the politics and ideology of genomic science, political and policy disputes within racial and ethnic groups in American metropolitan areas, and reasons for public (mis)trust in science. She has also written extensively about public opinion, political culture, American political thought, immigrant political incorporation, and public schooling. Her teaching includes a popular course on 'Power in (Mostly) American Society.'
Analysis of Hochschild's recent publications reveals consistent engagement with the intersection of race, politics, and science. Her work spans from examining urban policy conflicts through race/class lenses to exploring how genomic science is reshaping American society. A recurring theme is the tension between scientific facts and political beliefs, particularly regarding race and identity. Her scholarship demonstrates deep methodological diversity, drawing on qualitative methods, surveys, and theoretical analysis to address complex political questions.
