Jennifer Goetz is the H.W. Stodghill, Jr. and Adele H. Stodghill Professor of Psychology at Centre College, where she has been a faculty member since 2011. She holds a PhD in Social and Personality Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BS in Information and Decision Systems from Carnegie Mellon University. She previously taught at Middlebury College and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger.

Her research centers on emotional experience and culture, particularly how empathy and compassion are shaped by social, cultural, and evolutionary factors in the U.S. and China. She also investigates racial bias, inclusive pedagogy, and interventions to promote equity in educational settings. Her work integrates social, cultural, and cognitive psychology to understand human emotion and behavior in diverse contexts.
Her recent publications span topics such as compassion science, human-robot interaction, racial climate in higher education, and emotional regulation across cultures. These works reflect a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining empirical research with applied social justice initiatives.

Dr. Goetz mentors undergraduate researchers, notably guiding ten scholars in the 15th cohort of the Centre Posse program. She has led significant institutional initiatives, including the Inclusive Classroom Series: Science & Math Edition, and co-organized workshops on anti-racism, implicit bias, and support for underrepresented communities. She has also hosted speakers such as Dr. Jeanine Abrams McLean and Dr. Elizabeth Page-Gould to advance dialogue on equity. Her leadership extends to departmental service, having chaired the Psychology Department from 2017 to 2021.
She was a Visiting Scholar at Tsinghua University’s Psychology Department in Beijing during her 2018 sabbatical, reflecting her international engagement in cultural psychology research.
