Jennifer Catalano is an Associate Professor at Flagler College and serves as the Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Deaf Education. She also coordinates the ASL minor and has been a faculty member since 2018, promoted to associate professor in 2024.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Special Education and an M.A. in Deaf Education from the University of Arizona, and a B.S. in Elementary Education from the State University of New York College at Cortland.
Dr. Catalano's research focuses on high-leverage teaching practices, individualized instruction through flexible arrangements, literacy development, action research, and teacher coaching for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Her work aims to enhance educational outcomes through evidence-based strategies and professional development.
Her recent publications in the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and the Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Literacy demonstrate a consistent focus on improving teaching quality, vocabulary instruction, and student engagement in DHH education. These works highlight the importance of tailored instructional approaches and teacher support systems.
She has received several awards including:
- Henry Flagler Award, Flagler College (2025)
- Excellence in Diversity Award, Flagler College (2022)
- Inclusion Teacher of the Year, Glynn Archer Elementary School (2008-2009)
Dr. Catalano is actively involved in program leadership and professional service. She serves as the secretary for the Institutional Review Board, a member of the Faculty Senate, and chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for Innovative Online and Hybrid Instruction. Her teaching includes courses on foundations of DHH education, literacy, speech and hearing, and practicum supervision.
