Dr. Jennifer Becker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and an affiliated Associate Professor in Biological Sciences. She joined MTU in 2010 after serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on bioremediation of chlorinated groundwater contaminants, microbial ecology, bioenergy production via microbial processes, and waste recovery. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, an MS from the University of Illinois, and a BS from MTU.
Dr. Becker has received prestigious awards including the PECASE and NSF CAREER Award. She is active in professional organizations such as the American Society for Microbiology and serves as President of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). Her funded projects include over $1 million in sponsored research, with publications in journals like Environmental Science & Technology and Applied and Environmental Microbiology. She teaches courses in water/wastewater treatment and biological processes.
Her work emphasizes sustainable practices, including low-tech biosolids treatment and microbial fuel cell research. She mentors graduate students and collaborates on environmental finance initiatives with the EPA. Her research spans microbial kinetics, contaminant fate, and resource recovery from waste streams.
